Sam Altman: Socialist

It’s not news that Sam Altman is an idiot. But the most hilarious thing about his statement on the limited supply of DRAM is that he’s advocating what a lot of people on the right wing would call socialism – particularly the people who think Sam Altman is a genius.

It’s like Monsanto telling me my back yard and garden bed could be put to better use growing wheat for the greater good. And to be completely fair, that probably would be a better use of a finite resource than what it’s being used for now. But it’s MY garden and, something, something, property rights?

On a certain level, Altman has a fair point if he’s saying finite resources should be put to the best and most efficient use. So let’s extend that argument.

What’s the good of my car being parked 95% of the time when it could be transporting others when I’m not travelling?

Gold is a vital component in circuitry, so why not empty Fort Knox out and let this rare resource be used for what it’s actually useful for instead of being stockpiled just to say how rich America is? It would certainly bring down the cost of smartphones.

In fact, when you put it that way, it’s more like communism than socialism.

Given his political and business connections, it’s pretty bold of Altman to advocate for the limited supply of DRAM to be used by data centres instead of by [checks notes] the people who bought and own it. Especially since what was a fairly basic computer component ten years ago has become increasing scarce and expensive due to the activities of people like [checks notes again] oh. Sam Altman.

I’m all for maximising efficiency in using a finite resource but I also remember freedom, and Sam Alt-man can pry my RAM from my cold, dead motherboard.
