How to fix I.C.E.

There are millions of people who want ICE abolished. There are millions of people who want ICE strengthened. It’s a common debate about all kinds of services.

The solution is very simple, and it’s something I have learned from 25 years of reading and engaging with US conservatives.

Two words:

User pays!

That’s always been the guiding principle of conservatism. Taxpayers should not have to fund public schools if they want to send their kids to private schools or home school. There shouldn’t be publically funded libraries when there are people who don’t believe in reading. There should not be publically funded media when people don’t want to hear it.

And I don’t even need to mention health care. America has the best health care in the world, doesn’t it? Doesn’t it?

This principle applies no matter how many Washington elites try to tell you it’s “necessary.”

Also, was it not Ronald Reagan who said the most terrifying words in the English language are, “I’m from the government and I’m here to help”?

Well, you’ve proved that. Government run Immigration and Customs Enforcement has resulted in people being hired who aren’t even physically or psychologically fit enough to be an overnight mall cop.

What’s more, they’re being paid 5-figure bonuses before they’ve even done a day’s work! What kind of socialism is that? It’s Business 101, people! Where is the Department of Government Efficiency now?

The solution is simple, and it’s to follow the conservative solution for everything:
PRIVATISE I.C.E!

We all know that the private sector always gives a better service for a lower price, right? Right?

So, let them! Allow the free market to decide as it does best! Let the people choose their own ICE agents.

Now I’m not saying it will come cheap. A simple mid-morning raid on a restaurant could still run into hundreds of thousands of dollars. Not everyone who needs it can afford that.

For those who can’t afford to pay out of pocket, they can take out Immigration Insurance. If they require a raid, they can claim it on their insurance plan. After that, a very smart and community spirited assessor will look at the daylight murder you requested and decide if

a)    The procedure is covered under your policy
b)    The operation was warranted
c)    The company will pay for it

If the answer to all three questions is ‘yes’ then happy days!

If the answer to any of those questions is ‘no’ then you’ll have your life destroyed. But I’m sure we can all agree that this would only happen to people trying to game the system through over servicing, right?

You know it makes sense.

Or, as one of your fallen heroes liked to say, prove me wrong.

Next Week’s Executive Orders

In his latest act of ruling by fiat – which I’m sure is as the founders intended – Donald Trump claims he’s restoring water pressure to showers.

Never mind the fact that the low-flow attachments are easily removed and Trump’s order will not make them disappear. In fact, I’ll bet every knuckle-dragger in a red hat will claim they’ve just had the best shower they’ve had since 2008 just because Trump said so.

It’s stupid, but it’s harmless stupid. Given that everything Trump does is stupid, let’s be thankful for small mercies and go with the harmless ones.

Here are some suggestions for next week, with appropriately Trumpian explanations:

Regulating Auditory Output in Broadcasting

April 13, 2025

Didja ever notice the ads on TV always seem louder than the shows? I’m tryin’ to watch Hannity and I gotta crank the sound all the way up just to hear all the great things he’s sayin’ about me. And then he throws to a commercial and it nearly blows your damn head off! So ya gotta reach for the remote and turn it down before your ears start to bleed. But then the show comes back on and I can’t hear anything. What’s with that? We’re putting a stop to it right now.

Bringing Usability to Adhesive Products

April 14, 2025

You know those rolls of Scotch tape? They always come with a little thing on the end so you can find where to start peeling it real easy. But then once you’ve used it, it sticks down and you can never find the end. We’re gonna force manufacturers to put those little things at the end every two inches along the tape so you’re not driven crazy trying to find the end again. This should have been done years ago. I’m very smart!

Restoring the Honor of Women in the Media

April 15, 2025

There’s this thing with women on TV wearing suits and shirts and ties. Have you noticed that? I’ve noticed it. I don’t get it. Why would you wanna make women dress like that? These women are beautiful. Of course they’re beautiful, they’re on TV. Who wants to see a woman dressed like a man? I don’t know what I’m looking at!  Half the time I’m thinking, “Who’s this dude with long blonde hair and eye shadow who’s making me kinda horny?” Women never wore ties when I was growing up. Ties are what men wear. We’re gonna allow women to be women again.

Mordernizing Beverage Container Sealing Initiative

April 16, 2025

Modern soda bottles, I tell ya! You know they made the bottle caps so small. It’s supposed to be for the environment, so you know it’s all a hoax! And they’ve got that little ring, right? This little ring that’s supposed to break off when you open the cap. But it never breaks off properly! I’ve tried it! You’ve gotta go, “Oooh” this way, then you’ve gotta go “Ahh” that way, and most of the time that doesn’t even work, so you’ve gotta go “wiggle… wiggle… wiggle… wiggle… … wiggle…” and even then it gets stuck on half way. You could cut your lip. You risk bleeding to death just coz you’re thirsty. And by the time you get it off, your soda’s gone flat and disgusting. We’re banning those stupid rings. You’re welcome!

Making Umbrellas Great again. MUGA!

April 17, 2025

How come you can’t get umbrellas closed? Nobody knows how to do it. I don’t know how to do it and I’m a genius so obviously nobody else can either. We’re gonna force companies to make umbrellas close again. I hear makers saying their umbrellas are closable so it’s working already. Why couldn’t Sleepy Joe Biden have done this? MUGA!

Uniting America Through Common Timekeeping

April 18, 2025

It makes no sense that patriotic Americans in places like Florida have to stay up late to see the game just because it’s being played in a “left coast” state like California. People doing business in New York have to wait until lunchtime because the crazies in San Francisco don’t wake up until 3 hours later. From this moment forward, America will have one time zone. There will be no central time, mountain time, crazy kook west coast time, there will just be American time. They will call it Freedom Day!

Modification to Government Record Keeping

April 19, 2025

It isn’t 1812 or whatever anymore, right? You gotta be able to read if laws are signed. And all these damn bills signed in ballpoint or maybe even a fountain pen… do you know anyone who uses a fountain pen? I can’t get ’em to work. And I don’t have to cos I got something way better! This stuff doesn’t even show up on TV cameras properly so how does anyone know if it’s been signed and by who, right? This big, beautiful order declares null and void any law where the signature lines aren’t at least 1/8th inch thick Sharpie. I have one right here, isn’t it beautiful? And it smells great too. Here, smell that. Doesn’t that smell great? You see what I mean now, don’tcha? It all makes sense now, doesn’t it?

Pink Floyd announce 51st Anniversary Edition of The Dark Side of the Moon

Pink Floyd have announced the 51st Anniversary Meta-Edition of their classic album The Dark Side of the Moon. (Apparently, they have made other albums.)

The album has been given yet another remix with representatives of the band stating this is the first to combine modern digital techniques and vintage analogue technology contemporary to the making of the album.

“Some found the recent Dolby Atmos mix to be very ‘modern’ sounding” said mix engineer James Guthrie. “We found that taking the newly re-digitised multitracks and routing them back through the original mixing desk gave as close as we could get to the sound Pink Floyd would have made if they had today’s technology in 1973.”

As close as they can get until next year, anyway.

The original quadraphonic mix was used as the basis for the new mix, enlisting a new hack of Pink Floyd’s legendary azimuth coordinator with additional channels added for modern sound reproduction.

The complete Meta-Edition will be released in an 8-disc box containing 5 CDs, each featuring 20% of the full mix and intended to be played simultaneously for full effect, the new Meta-mix on a single CD, The Dark Side of the Moon Live at Wembley again because up yours, and a Blu-ray disc containing the new Meta-mix in 5.1 and Dolby Atmos, the original unreleased Alan Parsons quad mix, a stereo fold down of the Meta-mix in 192kHz, 32-bit, and as yet unannounced video content, but probably the same concert films as the last three versions.

The Blu-ray also contains the individual multitracks in WAV format, which will allow fans to mix the 52nd anniversary edition.

The full-on Meta-Edition comes housed in a 1/2048 sized pyramid which, as of the time of writing, also includes a hardcover book of photographs, a crystal prism, a silk handkerchief, a velvet pouch containing 3 grams of tobacco salvaged from Abbey Road ashtrays at the time of recording, a replica of Richard Wright’s shopping list from November 13th 1972, and a 7-inch vinyl disc of the unremastered mono radio edit of Money because you’re made of it aren’t you.

This release will be followed in six months’ time by an individual release of the Blu-ray disc negating the need to buy all the other trash to get the good stuff, and the in early 2025 by a quarter-speed mastered, 220 gram, 45rpm double LP on holographic mirrored vinyl.

In a press release, David Gilmour described the 51st Anniversary Edition as, “Probably the only version of The Dark Side of the Moon you need to own. This year.”

When contacted for comment, Roger Waters said, “Get the fuck off my lawn!”

The 51st Anniversary Meta Edition of The Dark Side of the Moon is released on April 1st, 2024.

Bill Shorten presents “That’s Who I Am”

I heard Bill Shorten speaking on Insiders this morning. In the clip from earlier this week, he said:
“Just so people understand, and people should expect: I never give up because I won’t, because I don’t. That's who I am.”
And I wondered if I was hearing a speech from the leader of the opposition or a Taylor Swift song.

So that made me wonder how one would work as the other…

Breaking News....

We now cross live to a press conference being held by the prime minister Mr Abbott to eplain the reduction in the threshhold of his paid parental leave policy.

Good morning.

You might remember that when I first announced this policy as opposition leader it... um, came as, ah... a bit of a surprise to some of my party colleagues. Haha. Um, I did say at the time... ah... that, ah... sometimes it's better to ask forgiveness... than permission. I am pleased to say, ah... that they, um... they did forgive me, hehe... and more importantly than that, the Australian people embraced us and... gave us the mandate to enact real change.

I always said that that Paid Parental Leave scheme would be a... um, a signature policy of my government. Now, that has not changed. It has. Not. Changed.

I think everybody knows... and, um... understands that a, um, "signature" is something that... ah... can sometimes be... um... very hard to read. Ah... it doesn't always say... um... what you might think it says... It can sometimes look... completely different... to what it actually says. That is in the very nature... if I may say so... of signatures... and therefore... signature policies.

So, um, inconclusion, it's not a broken promise. Thank you, no more questions.

How a climate-denial editorial might read if the same thinking were applied to smoking

We at this publication, along with cool-headed thinkers all over the world, welcome a new poll which proves that the public are rejecting the alarmist nonsense that is touted about smoking.

New research shows that up to one in four smokers believe the health impact of cigarettes has been exaggerated. We agree and we applaud them, though we wish the number were far higher.

For fifty years now, we have been told that smoking causes everything from cancer to heart disease to gangrene. If there were any credibility to these warnings, surely market forces would have stamped out cigarettes long ago without any involvement from the Nanny State.

Fact: Cancer does not cause heart disease. Fact: Heart disease does not cause cancer. Fact: Gangrene doesn’t cause cancer or vice versa.

Yet these so-called “health experts” expect us to believe that smoking causes all of them. I am not a doctor but this just doesn’t add up. Next they’ll be telling us smoking is to blame for broken arms, short-sightedness and hangnail too.

We suspect that whenever a “doctor” finds a condition he can’t explain, he just blames smoking as an easy scapegoat.

I’d like to introduce some of these so-called “doctors” to my great grandfather who started smoking a pipe when he was seven and died a mere ninety years later.* Or to our board member who is in her 80s and smokes every day.* Those poor doctors would feel pretty foolish then.

No-one can conclusively prove that any smoker who happened to develop cancer wouldn’t have gotten it anyway. You will never hear that from the cancerist lobby.

We are not suggesting that smoking is good for you. We are no less concerned about public health than others about it. However, any fair-minded person should be concerned about the exaggerations over smoking. Such alarmism by cancerists has the potential for a devastating impact on jobs, from farms to manufacturing to retailing. So we lose jobs and increase the power of the medical lobby as it sells us snake oil in the form of “nicotine replacement.”

We also wonder what the cancerists have against our beloved Aussie smoko. Do they want to abolish break times altogether? One has to wonder if the cancerist lobby is socialism masquerading as health care.

Microsoft to sue Apple for trademark infringements

Lawyers for the Redmond company claim that creating their own version of a perfectly good program, forcing people to switch to it and releasing it before it's ready are universally recognised as part of the Microsoft brand and that Apple has clearly breached those trademarks with the inclusion of Apple maps in its iOS6 release.

The Age of Entitlement

The Age of Entitlement by Billablog

When the EU is in its seventh decade
And the East will dominate
The solution to protect our interests
Is to dismantle the welfare state

This is the ending of the Age of Entitlement, the Age of Entitlement
Entitlement!  Entitlement!

No more guarantee of welfare
Going to fend for yourself there
Looking to our Asian neighbours
Gonna do things same as they does
Must make necessary savings
Do it by eliminating,
Entitlement… Entitlement

No more pensions, no more baby bonus
No first home buyers grant
John Howard said that we could afford it
Now Joe Hockey says we can’t

This is the ending of the Age of Entitlement, the Age of Entitlement
Entitlement!  Entitlement!

Thinking of Linking

Volume three of all the web pages I've posted, retweeted, liked, dugg, stumbled or otherwise taken note of during the year.  (I know that Reddit is supposed to be the cool way to do this now, but it's truly the worst designed site since the Drudge Report)

Arranged into broad categories and in vaguely chronological order of when I found them, and now with a new section highlighting the year in stupid.
As usual, linking does not necessarily imply agreement and/or endorsement, blah blah blah...
